Anuradha sorting out dried reeds

UNDP Sri Lanka

The sun begins to cast its rays upon a little house in the village of ‘Swastigama’ at ‘Ipologama.’ Happy giggles of a child accent the morning birdsong as she runs around the garden with a playful little puppy yapping at her heels. The whirr of a sewing machine inside the house comes to an abrupt halt as a voice calls out, “Don’t get sand on the reeds!”

Anuradha returns her attention to the machine, where she puts the finishing touches on another panel of a handbag she has been making. She has an order to complete in a few days and must get as many hours in to complete it in time. Most of the women who own a sewing machine in this village would probably use it for stitching of fabric, but for Anuradha, it is something different; her raw materials are the very reeds drying in her garden.

We have lots of farmers and people involved in agriculture in this area who face many difficulties because of these plants - and it is a big problem. I’m glad that in my small way I can assist someone out there to carry out their cultivation,
